📒 Selector Reference: Get to know your selectors

This article defines a list of all of the question selectors available along with the options available. At the bottom of the page, you can find the options explained.

Note: List and table selectors only have options that can apply to all of the questions within the selection. As a consequence, should you wish to set a 'Max Word' count against each one of the questions selected (for example), you must first Break Apart the selection

Word / PDF Selectors

Single Question

Select one or more paragraphs/images or tables in Word to create a single question.

Each Numbered List Item a Question

Select a list of numbered paragraphs. Each list item will become a question. The numbers will assigned to Refs.

Creates a section with section text followed by a list of questions (one per numbered list item)

Creates a section from content above a table, then defines the table by One Row per Question.

Text Selection

Defines a question from a text range within a single paragraph

Section

Creates an 'empty' section. When selecting questions within a section, the user can select from 'Section Text' (which defines the text at the top of the section), and any set of question selectors (above).

Heading

Creates a heading. All questions below this point will be assigned to this heading, until the next heading is defined.

Excel / Word Table Selectors

One Row per Question

Each row within the table is a question. Users may override row and column behaviour as follows:

Column Types

  • Question - Part of the question

  • Answer - A placeholder to enter an answer

  • Section - Creates a section. This only applies when rowspan is used, and encompasses all question rows within that span

  • Ref - The question number

  • Ignore - Ignores the column (e.g. if it's blank or has no bearing)

Row Types

  • Heading - Usually the first row. This isn't always the case however, and some tables have no heading

  • Section - Creates a section for all questions below, until the next section is encountered

  • Question - The row will be converted into a question

  • Ignore - Ignores the row

One Answer per Row

A question is asked towards to the top of the table, and then blank rows are available to place the answers. For example: 'List three references', with a separate row for each reference.

Column Types

  • Question - Part of the question

  • Ignore - Ignores the column (e.g. if it's blank or has no bearing)

Row Types

  • Question - The row will be converted into a question

  • Heading - Usually the first row. This isn't always the case however, and some tables have no heading

  • Answer - The row is where an answer will be placed (typically these are the blank rows)

  • Ignore - Ignores the row

The top cell is the question and the bottom cell is where the answer should be placed

The left cell is the question and the right cell is where the answer should be placed

Single Cell Question

The question is defined in a single cell. By default the answer will be placed in the same cell, under the question.

Column Types

  • Question - Part of the question

Question Parts Selector

The question parts selector is special. If you break down any other selectors until they cannot be broken down anymore, then you are left with a set of question parts.

Among the options available are Question Parts and Answer Parts. Clicking into these allows the user to build up the question from any set of individual items (paragraphs, cells etc), and to define any number of Answer Parts (more than one will mean that the question is mult-part).

Ref

The Ref is a unique reference for the question. Answertree will do its best to list this out of the document, but you can also override this by setting it to 'Auto Generated' (a counting number 1,2,3 etc) or to a User Defined value.

Note: In the case of list and table selectors, the ref will be displayed as a range e.g. Q1->Q3. You can override this to be Auto Generated, however if you wish to override each question value, you must first Break Apart the selection.

Note: Refs are always unique. In the case of a duplicate, Answertree will append parentheses to the end e.g. Q1(1)

Place Answer

This defines where the answer will be located should the user opt to export the document back into the original file (exporting to a new Word File will always export questions and answers in document order).

The following options are available:

  • Under Question - default for single question answers and lists. The answer will appear under each question

  • Select Location - when selected, the screen is placed in 'Answer Location' mode, and the user may select an element to replace with the answer, or place the answer below

  • External Document - will always export the question and answer to a separate Word File

Note: In the case of list and table selectors, Select Location is not available. If you wish to set a specific location for each answer, you must first Break Apart the selection.

Max Words

Answertree will do it's best to read the max word count from the document (where it is defined). This value may be overridden or set by the user.

Question Parts

Build up the question from multiple parts (paragraphs, cells etc)

Answer Parts

Defined any number of Answer Parts (more than one will mean that the question is mult-part).
